Advertising
This week we watched the video "Killing Us Softly." Jill Kilbourne showed some advertisements that were bothersome to her. I would have to agree with what Kilbourne said. Girls are made to look super young and vulnerable in most ads we see. This Calvin Klein ad is for a pair of jeans. When I first saw this ad, I'll be honest I barley noticed the jeans. The fact that she looks as if she is a defenseless twelve year old, half naked, and an unbelievably thin (notice her spine protruding from her back) girl is what Kilbourne talked about a lot in her video. Why do women have to be so ungodly thin and look so vulnerable in advertising? Just as Kilbourne said men advertisements are no better. The men have to be macho looking and most of the time they are shirtless. Why have companies decided that this is the way they want to display their products?

This is very true, I like what you said about not even noticing the jeans at first because of the other distractions of the photo. She extremely thin and honestly doesn't look healthy. The only way anyone would know that this is a jean commercial is because it says jeans but its not even the main focus of the picture which is also something she talked about. I don't know why companies have decided this is the way they want to display their products but like Kilbourne said, its unacceptable and we need to do something about it. I also like how you brought up that she looks young, because she may not even be young but advertisers want to make people think that because it's a "good thing." With this, I definitely don't understand it either but there are things we can do to change it instead of trying to understand it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the whole passage above, it is hard for us to notice what the women is advertising because of the distractions within the photo. She looks like a 12 year old girl is right, and her body looks like she hasn't ate in a week, I don't know either why companies do this and claim it is as beautiful, I think it is far from it and agree with Kilbourne as well.
